About NYLC
For more than two decades, NYLC has led a movement linking youths, educators, and communities to redefine the roles of young people in society. That movement is service-learning, and it empowers youths to transform themselves from recipients of information and resources into valuable, contributing members of a democracy.
Service-learning is a teaching method that enriches learning by engaging students in meaningful service to their schools and communities through a process that is carefully integrated with established learning objectives. It emphasizes critical thinking and problem solving; takes on real issues such as hunger, homelessness, and diversity; and values people of all ages as citizens with talents to offer.
Each year, thousands of practitioners attend NYLC trainings and receive technical assistance. The National Service-Learning Conference draws nearly 3,000 attendees from around the world for three intensive days of speakers, workshops, and networking. And initiatives such as Growing to Greatness: The State of Service-Learning Project and Y-RISE: The Service-Learning and HIV/AIDS Initiative provide research that is transforming the field of service-learning and influencing public policy.
Among its many accomplishments, NYLC helped write the service-learning provision for the National Community Service Act; advised the Clinton transition team on the creation of the Learn and Serve America grant program; led the development of the "Essential Elements," nationally accepted standards for service-learning; and helped implement service-learning programs around the world. As it moves through its third decade, NYLC remains focused on its mission to increase the capacity of schools and communities to engage young people in active learning and service.
Together with its partners, the organization is shaping a world where …
• Youths are valued contributors of resources, measured by their successes, not just their shortcomings.
• All people are respected, capable, useful partners in their communities.
• Learning is powerful, essential, and lifelong.
Consistent with this vision, NYLC strives for programming and services that are multicultural in content, and engage individuals from diverse backgrounds, ages, and perspectives.
